The Book

There are no walls in Judy Alvarez’s office.

No windows or ceilings, just fresh air and a bagful of hope and promise. For more than 20 years, Alvarez, a PGA and LPGA Professional, has been the “CEO” of her domain at one of many practice ranges throughout the country where she has met men and women in search of a new chapter in their lives. Golf has been their vehicle, and Alvarez has been the driver.

For the first time, comes a narrative that takes you into the environment of teacher-student that extends beyond a traditional “how-to” book. The teaching career of Judy Alvarez moves like the eye of the camera as she provides her expertise to the physically-challenged. The stories will provide inspiration to those living with disabilities, their families and golf professionals dedicated to improving their students’ quality of life. Alvarez’s teaching career began with the physically-challenged, and it is because of that unique starting point that we discover how any golf professional can move into unchartered teaching territory.

Broken Tees and Mended Hearts serves up a remarkable series of stories and images involving civilians and many of our nation’s heroes of the armed services. You will discover, as did Judy, that her students underwent extraordinary means and with minimal complaint to achieve a level of peace with a golf club in their hands.

Judy’s stories, which are supplemented by a teacher’s extra sense of care, guides the reader to better understand how the game of golf serves as a therapeutic and rehabilitative tool; a remarkable healing exercise and a means to improve one’s quality of life. Golf does save lives.
These lives could be your mother, father, sister, brother, husband, wife, child, grandparent, neighbor, co-worker who have endured a horrific tragedy –– either while serving in the military, a freak accident, a deteriorating health condition, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, they all have come together on the practice tee, Judy’s office, and their experiences are intended to inspire you

Some things in life are priceless, and one cannot put a price tag on companionship, friendship, sharing and watching others grow. As Judy’s students heal, they come to accept that life cannot be measured by the numbers on a scorecard but by the journey.

“…Honest stories of her own heartfelt need to learn how to deal with special needs people convey her personal and professional integrity. Further, the stories of her skills applied to desires of her students, albeit reluctant, skeptical and otherwise, tell of the triumphs of both. Judy has composed prose about golf never before written. She delves deep into the essences of golf and its extraordinary effects on its players.”

“Why does anyone want to play golf? The game can be exceedingly difficult on your best days! The game of golf is often about adjusting one’s character. These stories tell of the character of students and the adjustment that golf brought to their lives. Those adjustments brought joy into the lives of golfers. Thanks, Judy.”
